1863

Mintage:  49,840,000

Comments:  1863 has the highest stated mintage within the copper nickel series.  Once again, civil war memorabilia collectors present an additional demand on this date.  This added demand results in retail prices being higher than otherwise would be expected.  Finding the most attractive and well struck piece for a collection should be easy.  Collectors should be well versed in grading, as grading standards have degraded.

The best die variety for this date is the variety 11 doubled die reverse.  The reverse die stage C die cud for variety 5 is highly collectable and elevates the premium significantly.
